Boiling Sand River
Boiling Sand River 1) Take the westbound train from Armstrong to mile 19.3, Bath Lake. Paddle from Bath to Gnome Lake, Tamarack Lake and downstream on the Boiling Sand River. Follow the western arm of Smoothrock Lake north to Outlet Bay and paddle the Berg River into the Ogoki River and Whitewater Lake. Visit the Wendill Beckwith cabins on Best Island and take the exit to the SW via McKinley Lake to Smoothrock Lake, Caribou River, Caribou Lake and Little Caribou Lake to the take-out by the bridge at the south end. The bridge is 5km (3 miles) from the town of Armstrong. This is a 165km (102 mile) 9 day canoe trip.

For a shorter 5 day trip, exit Smoothrock Lake at the north east corner directly into the Caribou River and continue to the take-out on little Caribou.

2) Alternatively, paddle-in from Magotte Lake (with a shuttle along the Obonga Lake Road from Hwy 527) Paddling north through Kenakskannis, Boulder, Shawanabis and Collins Lakes and portage across the RR tracks to Bath Lake. 12 days.

3) Or, thirdly, Shuttle on the Tamarack Lake Road from Armstrong, to begin your trip at Tamarack Lake. 8 days.

These routes can be travelled in the reverse direction, ending at at Bath Lake, Collins or Magotte Lake - see map set of Little Caribou to Boiling Sand in the next section. (Just remember to book the train by phone or email or arrange a shuttle before you leave).
