Take Via Rail from Armstrong (or further afield if appropriate) to Schultz's Trail on Lake Onamakawash (mile-marker 24.7). Cross the East end of the Lake to the Lookout River and Smoothrock Lake, from where there are three route options:
- From the Lookout River paddle north up the west arm of Smoothrock Lake to Berg River, Ogoki River and Whitewater Lake. Exit Whitewater at the southeast corner via McKinley, Laurent and Smoothrock Lakes to Boiling Sand River and the Bath Lake train stop (mile-marker 19.3 from Armstrong).
- A shorter alternative is to circle Smoothrock Lake paddling up the west side, returning south on the east side, directly to Boiling Sand River.
- Finally, for the shortest route, after exiting the Lookout River, paddle east on Smoothrock directly to the Boiling Sand River and then south to Tamarack Lake and the train stop at Bath Lake.
The Ogoki Lodge on Whitewater Lake is worth checking out. It was originally built as an eco-tourism destination with a main lodge built in the shape of a giant teepee. Although left in disrepair, it is to be restored as a commercial lodge.
Also the Wendell Beckwith cabins are a must visit site while they last as, sadly,they are no longer maintained. Wendell Beckwith was a native of Whitewater, Wisconsin and an inventor. In his search for solitude he lived on Best Island from 1961 until his death in 1985. He built a large pine cabin and later a smaller one (The Snail) into the hillside that was more efficient to heat in winter. , both completetly from locally sourced materials
